“Where have you been?! Everyone's been most worried, Miss Shylocke!”

And, without waiting for a reply, Esmé dragged her up one of the two staircases and down the corridor to Lady de Temps’ quarters. “What a state you are!” The Færie declared, looking appalled. “Are those bruises? What have you been doing?!”

Deciding against telling the truth, Erica opted for a half-truth. “I was at The Limbo Times going through their archives and I walked into a door,” she said, feeling her sore face where Xerxes had struck her.

Esmé looked at her sceptically, but chose not to ask any more questions. “Nothing that a little makeup cannot hide. There's still time to get you looking decent.” It knocked on a pair of oak doors before opening one and shoving her through. “In you pop.”

Fifty minutes later, she’d been scrubbed within another inch of her life and was standing in front of a tall mirror. Esmé fluttered around her, making the final adjustments to her skirts and hair.

Erica hardly recognised herself. Under Lady Regina’s careful eye, the Færie had then helped her with her makeup before donning her corset. Once secure, it had helped her step into the dark magenta gown with its full skirts and glittering bodice.

Lady Regina smiled approvingly as Esmé tightened up the laces to the bodice. “The colour suits you, my dear. I can see why you like it so.”

“How should we have her hair, milady?” The Færie asked, taking a step back.

“Loose, but elegant, I think. As if it demands to be touched. Let it trail here...” she said, tracing a line from Erica’s chin to her cleavage.

Erica blushed.

“You really are naughty, milady!”

The old lady chuckled. “I know.”

Blow drying her hair with its hot palms, the Færie spent several minutes taming her black locks, pinning them back, tucking and curling them until it revealed a side chignon with loose tendrils that curled attractively around her face. It offset her vibrant eyes splendidly. Lady Regina was delighted.

The Færie then selected a star-shaped Diamante pin to decorate her hair. It was about to place a matching necklace about the girl’s neck when Erica placed a hand over the chain already there.

“I should like to keep this one on, please,” Erica said. She didn’t dare let it out of her sight. Not after what her mother had said.

“Certainly, ma’am.”

Slipping on some heeled shoes in black satin, Erica felt quite wonderful.

“There,” said the Færie, passing her some long white gloves and stepping back to appreciate its handy work. “You scrub up well.”

Erica winced at the word ‘scrub’.

Esmé met Lady Regina’s eyes with a twinkle. “We really are cruel.”

The old lady’s lips twitched saucily, and she linked her arm through Erica’s. “I know, but it feels so good.”

“I don’t understand,” Erica said, marvelling at her reflection. She’d never looked so glamorous!

Lady Regina and Esmé chuckled. “Nothing, dear, it’s nothing.”
